Personal growth is greeted by exposure to another culture in far-flung Bhutan, where just 12 farmhouse suites comprise Gangtey Lodge, nestled at the heart of a U-shaped valley. Such landscapes of peaks and troughs are common across these ancient lands, and each are believed to have their own individual character. Here, Phobjika Valley is ‘the valley of stillness’, very apt for a destination centred around Buddhist practice and time spent in nature.
A stay here is ideal for those searching for something new, to find joy in experiencing a lifestyle different form their own, all while traversing the lodge’s five key areas of well-being; physical, spiritual, emotional, social and intellectual. To say that guests feel both culturally and personally enriched as they say goodbye to this small enclave of a spiritual nation is an understatement.
Something special Sitting down to dine on a private breakfast (or lunch) experience looks a little different at Gangtey Lodge. Held within the 17th-century Gangtey Goenpa (the neighbouring monastery), the experience begins with Thsewang Prayer alongside Buddhist Monks. A half-hour session for personal empowerment, wish fulfilment and a healthy life, it involves the lighting of butter lamps, a personal blessing from the Tulku, and an exclusive tour of the Monastery – all before breakfast.
We recommend Make the most of spectacular views from dawn to dusk. Situated in the wide glacial Phobjika Valley, request a first-floor farmhouse suite to wake to the best views on offer. And if gazing out over the nature reserve that Gangtey Lodge calls home isn’t enough, we’d recommend getting out into the wild and hiking along ancient trails through blue pine forests to really enjoy such picture-perfect surroundings.
Extraordinary experiences
Our hand-picked well-being activities to make the most of your stay at Gangtey Lodge...
Meditate alongside Buddhist monks A short stroll from Gangtey Lodge lies The Shedra, a Buddhist college where evening classes are held to allow guests a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of a monastery. Experienced lamas lead meditation and discussion on compassion and Shamata – meaning tranquillity – with a goal of overcoming stress, moving into a peaceful mindset and promoting kindness. It’s almost a given to feel a real sense of rejuvenation as a result.
Embrace the healing warmth of nature Hot stone baths are an ancient Bhutanese tradition. In this iteration, boulders sourced from a nearby river are used to heat a bathtub expertly crafted from local pinewood. In a relaxing soak, see how heat from the water, minerals released from the rocks, plus herbs foraged from the forest hold a plethora of medicinal benefits.
Try your hand at archery and darts Bhutan’s national sport, Dha, or archery is a tricky one to master, but well worth the sense of accomplishment. The most popular sport for the Bhutanese people (alongside Khuru, or darts), test your skills with a traditional bow and arrow, learning technique tips from the accomplished resident archers at Gangtey Lodge.
